How Laser CO2 Resurfacing Works
The laser is meant to deliver heat, which causes the skin to peel and produces collagen. The laser is creating tiny holes that penetrate into the epidermis and the dermis. The treatment triggers the body’s natural healing response. Because the newest CO2 lasers “selectively” heat the area being treated, there are regions of healthy skin between the areas treated with the laser (this is on a microscopic level). This speeds up the healing process and reduces the discomfort and side effects of older conventional lasers.
What to Expect
Generally, patients do one or two treatments for laser resurfacing. The second laser treatment is typically done 6-12 months after the first. We was patients to budget 5-7 days of downtime- this is a time where redness, swelling and peeling are to be expected. Patients are comfortable, but you don’t look your best for about a week. The trade-off for the healing time is a beautiful clinical result. Dr. McCoy does a lot to make you comfortable before, during and after your treatment.
