Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is used to treat sun-damaged skin, reduce the pore size, acne, general texture issues and pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratosis). This treatment is typically combined with Photorejuvenation/IPL and the use of blue light. Dr. McCoy was one of the first physicians in Arizona to perform Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), and continues to recommend the treatment as one of his favorites for Arizona sun-damaged skin.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Benefits

  • Minimal downtime
  • Non-surgical
  • Consistently beautiful results
  • Improve texture and pore size: skin glows
  • Skin improves for two months after treatment

How PDT Works

5-aminolevulinic acid (Levulan ®) is a topical that is applied to the treated area. There is no discomfort with this application. The Levulan ® is allowed to incubate (sit on the skin) for an amount of time to be determined by Dr. McCoy. The treated area is then activated with a light source, typically an intense pulsed light or blue light. This causes a photosensitivity reaction in the target cells in the treated area: treatment of pigment, abnormal cells and/or the sebaceous (oil) glands.

What to Expect

Dr. McCoy typically suggests a treatment series of 1 to 3 treatments. Patients are photosensitive for a couple days after the treatment, and red a few days. There may be some mild peeling of the skin, similar to sunburn. Treatment can be performed anywhere on the body, but the most common areas for treatment are: face, neck, chest and hands.
