Photodynamic Therapy
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a type of light therapy used to treat sun-damaged skin, reduce pores, treat acne, improve texture, and treat precancerous lesions (actinic keratosis). Dr. McCoy was one of the first physicians in Arizona to perform Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and continues to recommend the treatment as one of his favorites for sun-damaged skin.
The Benefits of Photodynamic Therapy

Downtime
Needed
The procedure is non-invasive and requires little to no downtime. There may be sensitivity and redness for a couple of days post-treatment.
When You Can Expect Results
Patients are photosensitive for a couple of days and red for a few days after treatment. Dr. McCoy typically suggests a series of 1 to 3 treatments for maximum results.
What to Expect From Treatment
5-aminolevulinic acid (Levulan ®) is a topical applied to the treated area and allowed to incubate (sit on the skin) for a set amount of time. The area is then activated with an intense pulsed light or blue light. The light causes a photosensitivity reaction in the target cells in the treated area: treatment of pigment, abnormal cells, or the sebaceous (oil) glands. Patients are photosensitive for a couple of days and red for a few days after treatment. There may be some mild peeling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. Treatment can be performed anywhere on the body, but the most common areas for treatment are the face, neck, chest, and hands. Dr. McCoy typically suggests a series of 1 to 3 treatments for maximum results.
