Increased melanin—caused by sun damage, skin injuries, acne, and skin inflammation—can cause dark spots on your skin, called hyperpigmentation. Though hyperpigmentation does not cause pain, these dark spots can be unsightly and may increase, especially with increased sun exposure and if the skin is already darkly toned. As such, people with dark skin in general are more predisposed to hyperpigmentation. It can also be found on some women as a result of changing hormone levels.
